I haven’t used darkroom techniques to make my work for almost ten years now. I used to be really good at darkroom printing, and honestly, one of the main reasons I became a photographer was because I was obsessed with it. Watching an image slowly appear in the tray always made me feel like some kind of magician. Haha. But many of the high quality chemicals and papers that once made darkroom printing so special were discontinued because of environmental regulations. If the materials can no longer reach the standard they once had, then I do not see any reason to keep relying on a process that cannot meet my expectations, especially with 2026 almost here.
Inkjet papers today are excellent. They follow the exact same logic as darkroom materials. You need to understand how to choose them and how to match the paper to the image. Not many people truly understand this. It is easier to simply say that real photography comes from the darkroom.
I respect that opinion. I only hope you can respect mine as well. I still like the darkroom, and to be honest, I am probably better at it than you. I am a technical person. If we talk purely about technique, I am pretty sure I win. Haha.
My position is simple. Time moves forward, and tools move forward. It is almost 2026. I would not buy a phone that cannot take pictures, and I am not going to tie my creative practice to a process that can no longer provide the quality it once had. The darkroom now is more like a way for me to relax. After spending too much time in front of a computer, I actually enjoy going back in, making a few prints by hand, and giving myself a quiet moment. It feels good and it is enough. But it is no longer my main creative method.
The darkroom is simply one of many working methods within photography. Today digital photography naturally evolves into a hybrid practice that brings together 3D modeling, sound, video, and other media. This hybrid way of working feels more honest to me, and it gives me a greater sense of freedom.

現在的 inkjet paper 選擇非常多,而且品質很好。老實說,它們和當年的暗房相紙、化學材料是同一個邏輯。你要懂得怎麼選、怎麼讓紙張和影像匹配。但真正理解這件事的人並不多,大家還是很習慣說一句話:暗房才是真的攝影。
我尊重這種看法,也希望你能尊重我的不同。其實我依然很喜歡暗房,而且老實說,我應該比你更擅長暗房。我本來就是技術流,如果單純從技術層面來討論,我相信我肯定比你好,哈哈。
我的立場很簡單。時間在往前走,工具也在往前走。都快 2026 年了,我不會去買一台不能拍照的手機。同樣,我也不會把自己的創作綁在一個已經無法再提供當年品質的技術上。現在的暗房對我來說更像是一種放鬆方式。當我在電腦前待太久,我反而會想回暗房,偶爾洗幾張照片,動動手,讓自己安靜一下。這樣就很好、剛剛好。但它已經不是我的主要創作方法。
暗房只是攝影眾多媒介方式中的其中一種。現在的數碼攝影自然會發展成一種混合型的創作方式,可以把三維建模、聲音、視頻和其他媒介整合在一起。這樣的混合式工作方式對我來說更誠實,也帶來更大的自由。
